The NYU Teacher Residency recently entered its sixth year. For 2021-2022, we welcome 126 residents who embark on their residency in eight cities: Albany, NY; Baltimore, MD; Danbury, CT; New York City, NY; Palm Beach, FL; San Francisco, CA; Syracuse, NY; and Washington, DC. Ninety-eight percent of our 38 partner schools are Title I.
The Teacher Residency evolves each year, and there is no question that last year provided many opportunities to push the boundaries on innovative teacher preparation. However, one constant remains: a diverse cohort of eager, committed, and inspiring residents.
This program is a rigorous master of arts in teaching combined with a residency in one of our partner schools for a full school year. With this model, residents engage with the curriculum online the majority of the time. Unlike many online programs, the Teacher Residency consistently retains a very high proportion of its enrollees through graduation – year-over-year 92.7 percent of residents graduate.
Here are a few fast facts about the 2021-2022 cohort:
- 65 percent identify as a Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color
- 69 percent identify as female, 29 percent identify as male, and 2.3 percent are gender nonconforming
- 21 states and 97 colleges and universities are represented among the residents
- 47 residents will specialize in special education, consistently cited by the US Department of Education as a high-need subject area
We’re excited to support this year’s cohort as they embark on this meaningful journey in the NYU Teacher Residency.
