Tyrah Green
About Me
I’m Tyrah, and I currently live on Ohlone land, also known as Oakland, CA, though I’m originally from the East Coast. Besides teaching, I enjoy everything creative, especially dance and visual arts. I also consider myself a connoisseur of reality TV, which I like to watch with my two pet rats, Isla and Coriander (90 Day FiancĂ© is their favorite). I’m a 2020 graduate of Brown University, where I studied Education Studies with a Human Development focus. My main interests are critical, culturally-responsive and affirming approaches to literacy, alternatives to discipline, and incorporating theories of disability into everyday teaching practice.
What about the residency are you most looking forward to?
The people! I think that teaching and learning are all about the people around you. I feel grateful that I get to be in a classroom with a mentor teacher rather than just in my room reading theory, and that I get to reflect on and share this experience with people in various areas of the US.
Did you have a teacher who made a lasting impression on you?
Mr. Blanchette was my choir teacher and theatre director. This meant we saw each other A LOT -- and he not only made me feel heard and valued, but also had high standards for me. To this day, I see participating in the plays he directed as some of my biggest accomplishments and the things I'm most proud of, because he truly motivated me to do my best.
