I have lived in the Capitol District near Albany NY for most of my life. I have worked for Saratoga Springs City School District as a teaching assistant for the past four years. Initially, my plan was to become an elementary school teacher following college. I earned a bachelor degree in Elementary Education from Boston University while competing for the university’s D1 wrestling program. However, when I returned home I took a position as a teaching assistant working with students who have disabilities of various forms. This unplanned experience has shown me that I have the necessary skills and compassion to help these students be successful.
What about the residency are you most looking forward to?
The NYU Teacher Residency program offers a unique path to certification. I am most looking forward to working with a mentor teacher. I feel this relationship will provide invaluable real world experience and better prepare me for the role of a special education teacher.
Did you have a teacher who made a lasting impression on you?
Twelfth grade English was an amazing experiences. My teacher, who is currently running for the school board, valued community above all else. She would always start class with a few trivial pursuit questions. This quick but meaningful activity always provided a few laughs, humanized our teacher and brought the class together.
