Empire State Teacher Residency Grant with NYCPS
The Empire State Teacher Residency Program is an initiative of the NY State Department of Labor in response to the estimated 180,000 new teachers that will be needed in the next decade. In January of 2024, New York City Public Schools was awarded $12 million under the Department of Labor’s Empire State Teacher Residency Grant, which is a part of a state-wide response to address the growing need for teachers across the state. Â
In partnership with NYU, the Empire State Teacher Residency Program will support Inclusive Childhood and Secondary Special Education teacher residents through deep partnerships with NYCPS priority districts primarily located in Brooklyn and the Bronx.
The Empire State Teacher Residency grant affords participating residents a $30,000 tax-free stipend to cover the cost of living expenses during their residency, at the conclusion of which residents will be eligible for hire and will commit to 2 years of service within NYC Public Schools.
NYU Steinhardt has enjoyed a decades-long partnership with the New York City Public Schools (NYCPS).
