How You’ll Learn

Acquire Valuable Classroom Experience as You Study to Become a Certified Teacher

Our innovative teacher residency model embeds you in a high-need urban school — one of our partner middle or high schools — as you complete progressive online course work to earn your MAT.

Teacher Residency in a Partner School

You’ll learn how to teach by teaching, gradually at first, under the guidance of your teacher mentor and NYU Steinhardt faculty. You’ll progress to co-teaching, planning the curriculum, and then managing your own classroom.

The model draws on other professional pathways. Many of the best attorneys enter the profession through full-time clerkships, and doctors enter the profession through full-time internships and residencies.

Technology-Enhanced NYU Steinhardt Faculty Instruction

Our faculty will support and mentor you as you learn how to teach your subject and build core skills and classroom competencies. Your instructors and mentors will regularly observe your classroom practice through online video sessions, and work with you one-on-one and in small groups to hone your teaching skills.

Your curriculum, developed by NYU Steinhardt professors, will be tailored to meet the vision and mission of each individual partner school. Each online module allows you to connect learning theory with practice and builds on what you’re doing in the classroom. The course work and fieldwork lead to eligibility for initial teaching certification in New York State. If you wish to be certified in another state, you must research and ensure that you meet or will meet that state’s certification requirements.
