I am a 23 year old from Portland, OR. I am finishing up my Chemistry degree from Oregon State University, and then moving to New York City to do my student teaching through NYU in Brooklyn. The current plan is so start in an 8th grade science classroom in the fall. I love working with kids and am very excited about the opportunity presented by the teacher residency program. I work at a youth program on the Oregon State campus called KidSpirit. I work as a camp counselor in the summers and teach youth archery and work birthday parties during the school year.
What about the residency are you most looking forward to?
I am excited to live and work in an urban environment. Currently attend Oregon State University in the middle of a small farming town in Oregon, very excited to change scenery. I am looking forward to working at my school, Brooklyn Prospect. I am also going to be moving in with my childhood best friend who went to NYU for undergrad.
Did you have a teacher who made a lasting impression on you?
My 8th grade social studies teacher made me love the nerdy dorky parts of myself, and encouraged me to explore and learn. We would talk about music we liked, and he even went to a concert of a band I really liked during the school year and was able to talk to me about it. He encouraged me to build computers and tinker, and just really made a positive impact on me.
