Located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of northern Manhattan, School in the Square (S2) is a charter school modeled after the public square – a place where problems are solved and successes are celebrated. The school serves 298 students in a differentiated and inclusive learning environment.

At S2, everyone is welcome and every voice matters. It’s a school centered around community, building relationships, and doing what’s best for all students. Teachers, administrators, and students themselves work together to help students take control of their lives both inside and outside of the school walls. Leveraging a student-centered approach focused on student agency, students actively participate in educational choices and are given opportunities to find passions and build skills that extend far beyond the core subjects. The school fosters a culture of care where respect is mutual between students and teachers, and which supports a culture of achievement.

The charter school prides itself on a deep commitment to the profession of teaching, and a belief that careful thought and planning must go into the training, onboarding, retention of teachers. Co-teaching is core tenet, as is a collaborative and team-oriented approach to improving in the profession. District Initiatives

  • Fostering Relationships Through “Primetime” - In small groups of 10, students meet with one teacher for 20 minutes at the start of each day. This time might be spent on academics or on social emotional learning, with the goal of building strong relationships.
  • Co-Teaching Across All Classrooms - Using a co-teaching model in all core academic classes allows teachers to create targeted small group instruction within the classroom – challenging the highest performers while supporting struggling learners. Teachers are partners in what is best for children.
  • Leveraging Small-Group Instruction - Data on what each child needs is used to personalize learning and give students what they need. Each day students are in a small group in addition to core subjects – whether that’s more time on math, literacy, or counseling.
  • Practicing Restorative Justice - S2 takes a proactive role in nurturing positive behaviors by providing students with a range of supports as well as meaningful opportunities for social-emotional learning. When choices are made, staff are trained to look for the learning moment rather than punitive consequences..

The Details

As a teacher resident, you’ll be a co-teacher in your content area. This means you’ll work alongside another teacher and gain responsibility throughout the year. All of this immersive learning is designed to assist you with understanding your students and their learning process, setting you up to have a class of your own the following year.
