Culturally rich and deeply diverse, School District of Philadelphia’s (SDP) mission is to deliver on the civil right of every child in the city to an excellent public school education and ensure all children graduate from high school ready to succeed, fully engaged as a citizen of our world.
SDP is the eighth largest school district in the nation, investing in this unique type of teacher preparation program to put a great teacher in every classroom.
SDP prepares strong educators to commit to the growth of all students. School leaders and teachers work tirelessly to ensure students have access to great schools right in their own neighborhoods. To accomplish this, the district strives to recruit new educators who believe in all students, value continuous learning, effectively form relationships and collaborate with families, exhibit perseverance and grit, and dedicate their practice to proven data-driven instructional strategies. In return, SDP provides vast opportunities for educators to reach great heights in their teaching and be part of securing a promising future for the city.
You will find a variety of supports to help become a teacher of record in SDP. Your support does not stop there; once you complete your residency and move into a full-time role you’ll experience induction, new hire orientation, and a full year of coaching through the Peer Assistance and Review program. Your success will be a team effort at SDP.
- 100% of students will graduate ready for college or career. For the third year in a row, Philadelphia’s public school graduation rate has continued to increase. Now, the district is focused on accelerating this trend.
- 100% of eight-year-olds will read on or above grade level. During the first year of full implementation of the early literacy plan, the percentage of third graders reading on grade level increased by five points, surpassing statewide gains.
- 100% of positions filled by great principals, teachers, and employees. Across the city, principals, teachers, and school staff create safe, supportive, and academically-challenging environments.
- 100% of funding for great schools is secured with zero deficit. District-wide financial stability allows the district to make investments to improve the education that students receive.
You’ll be a Teacher Resident in SDP. Over the course of the year, while you’re completing coursework in the NYU Steinhardt Teacher Residency, you take on increased responsibility for one classroom. Your work is focused on teaching and learning and you will work closely with your mentor teacher. Each day, you will work with your mentor teacher to learn about classroom management, best practices in pedagogy, and how to build impactful relationships with your students and their families. When you successfully complete the program, you will become a teacher of record.
For the cohort entering the Residency in June 2019, SDP is seeking English, Math and Science teachers.
