Whether you’re a career changer or a new college graduate, learn to teach with a school-based residency.

It All Starts With Community

NYU Steinhardt’s Teacher Residency combines the comprehensive instruction of a master’s degree from a world-renowned research university with deep partnerships in schools across the country. While immersing into a school community, you are surrounded by multiple layers of support from your fellow resident teachers, in-school mentor teachers, and Steinhardt faculty.

With this full-time paid residency, you get the practical preparation you need to serve all students, create inclusive and supportive classroom environments, and become an integral part of the community.

Intensive practice and a gradual release of responsibilities in the classroom help you become a content area expert. The Teacher Residency program currently prepares teachers in the following areas:

  • English: Grades 7-12 with a 5-6 Extension
  • Mathematics: Grades 7-12 with a 5-6 Extension
  • Science: Grades 7-12 with a 5-6 Extension
  • Social Studies: Grades 7-12 with a 5-6 Extension
  • Special Education Generalist: Grades 7-12

Note: The coursework and fieldwork lead to eligibility for initial teaching certification in New York state. If you wish to be certified in another state, you must research and ensure that you meet or will meet that state's certification requirements before starting the program.

I’m making a difference and helping change lives, right now.
