Earn Your MAT and Prepare to Become a Teacher in One Year
Available in districts across the Northeastern US, the NYU Teacher Residency is a one-year, combined residency and online master of arts in teaching (MAT) that prepares you to serve students in diverse classrooms through rigorous practice-based learning.
Designed for aspiring teachers
Whether you are changing your career or are a new college graduate, this program empowers you to have a profound impact on students, classrooms, schools, and communities. You will earn your MAT and become a teacher in just one year. Best of all, many of these residencies lead to full-time teaching positions at the residency sites.
A safe and effective environment
Within a diverse teaching and learning community unlike any other, you’ll be provided with mentoring, coaching, advising, and moral support to help you learn and grow. It’s one of the many reasons our program received the 2024 AACTE Best Practice Award in Support of Multicultural Education and Diversity.
Two degree options
Earn a 34-credit MAT in Inclusive Childhood Education or a 30-credit MAT in Secondary Education. Degree option availability varies by residency site location.
You can earn as you learn
Full-day teacher residents can potentially receive compensation and/or benefits from their schools. In addition, some schools may offer or require a postgraduate employment commitment of up to two years.1
